Inner borough of N central Greater London;
population (1984) 187,900 features Hackney
Downs and Hackney Marsh, formerly the haunt
of highwaymen, now a leisure area; includes
Shoreditch, site of England's first theatre
(The Theatre) in 1576; Hoxton, with the
Geffrye Museum of the domestic arts; Stoke
Newington, where the writer Daniel Defoe once
lived. The horse-drawn hackney carriage is so
named because horses were bred in Hackney in
the 14th century.
